The Art and Spirit of Madge Gill was written by Vivienne Roberts in April 2019 and published by the College of Psychic Studies on June 14th 2019. Copies are available from the College at 16 Queensberry Place, South Kensington, London, SW7 2EB or by post if you call 0207 589 3292
This special edition of Light, established in 1881, is a celebration of the life and art of Madge Gill 1882-1961 and marks the centenary of the start of her creativity, which saw her embark on a 40 year spiritual and artistic journey. It also investigates her involvement in esoteric activities which were often dismissed by sceptics who believed her art did not originate from an authentic spiritual experience.
It includes discoveries from new research including a connection to early Spiritualists such as Arthur Conan Doyle and her use of the name Kharmastra, in addition to the better known ‘Myrninerest’. It also attempts to place Gill’s position in the outsider and spirit art worlds.
Above all, The Art and Spirit of Madge Gill is the fascinating story of an ordinary woman who, against the odds, led an extraordinary life.
